About Mercy Memorial Hospital
Mercy Memorial Hospital is one of the projects we are proud of; we have accomplished a great deal of work with them during the past 16 years, including energy and infrastructure upgrades, electrical service improvements, central plant optimization, and HVAC retrofits.
The Challenge
Formerly known as Mercy Memorial, the hospital joined ProMedica in 2015 and is now a part of the Mercy Health system. It is located in Monroe, Michigan, and offers a comprehensive range of services, including emergency care, orthopedics, cardiology, cancer care, primary care, and maternity services. Back in 2009, the local leadership team prioritized enhancing the central plant and HVAC system in the hospital, for they had realized a large amount of energy was being wasted in central plant operations; that is how they reached out to us.
EcoGreenVision’s Solutions
We conducted a structured analysis of their central plant at the time, reviewed the energy consumption and utility bills, and defined an objective goal: reducing energy costs by 25%, cutting CO₂ emissions, and enhancing comfort for patients and staff. After energy audits and system modeling, we began operating the sustainability project for the hospital.
Key Upgrades Over 16 Years
And since then, we have provided years of services to Mercy Memorial Hospital with costs exceeding $12 million. Over 16 years, EcoGreenVision delivered a series of sustainability projects. Here are the most impactful upgrades:
- We improved the existing electrical services.
- We replaced the existing transformer with two new double-ended 3000 KVA unit substations.
- We designed a district heating and cooling system by cross-connecting the central chilled water plant in two adjacent buildings.
- We connected two-pipe heating/cooling fan-coil units (serving patient rooms) so that they can operate with a state-of-the-art automatic control system.
- We designed an innovative retrofit to convert a constant air volume system to a variable air volume system for the operating rooms and OB/GYN suites.
- We designed and implemented fire protection and sprinkler systems for the hospital.
- We upgraded the entire hospital lighting systems with new energy-efficient types.
- We designed a central energy management system for the whole hospital.
- We replaced the then-current steam boilers with new energy-efficient types.
Results at a Glance:
- 20% reduction in annual energy use
- $3.5M in energy cost savings (estimate over project period)
- cutting CO₂ emissions by 4,500 tons
- lower maintenance costs through smarter upgrades
- Significant cost savings reinvested into patient care
