About Desert Regional Medical Center
Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed hospital in Palm Springs, California, providing healthcare services for the communities of the Coachella Valley and surrounding regions in Southern California, and functions as a cornerstone of the community's healthcare system.
The Challenge
Desert Regional Medical Center was founded in 1948. That’s why the central plants and HVAC systems were obviously outdated and not of use anymore when we visited for an on-site assessment in 2016. When we detect any inefficiencies in HVAC systems and central plants, the first solution that comes to mind is replacing the systems with more efficient and modern versions.
But replacing systems isn’t always the best solution. In many cases, retrofitting and upgrading the systems is a huge task, and you cannot accomplish it unless the operation is down for a few days. Although we have some alternatives, such as temporary and portable climate control equipment. But reinstallation of systems can be costly and even inefficient in some cases. So, we needed to review all available options and pick the best one for the facilities. The best solution for Desert Regional Medical Center was not the reinstallation of the HVAC system and central plant. It was a cost-effective alternative to full system replacements, optimizing and upgrading the pre-existing equipment. It could also extend system life without costly downtime.
Our Approach
We refurbished HVAC systems in a 24/7 operational healthcare facility with no interruption to the hospital's operation. Our HVAC refurbishment solutions help hospitals maintain compliance with strict regulatory standards such as HCAI, OSHPD, and ASHRAE. In many cases, minor repairs and component upgrades can extend equipment lifespan, improve energy efficiency, and minimize system downtime—all critical in healthcare environments where air quality and climate control are vital for patient safety and comfort.
Here is what we did for Desert Regional Hospital:
- We disassembled and cleaned the existing air handling units (AHUs)
- We replaced worn components like filters, motors, bearings, belts, and capacitors.
- We conducted thorough inspections and mechanical repairs.
- We upgraded the electrical and control systems.
- We reassembled and functionally tested all systems.
- We balanced airflow to meet hospital operational requirements.
Refurbishment Solutions Delivered
We successfully completed the refurbishment project in Desert Regional Hospital, helping healthcare clients save time and capital while enhancing system performance.
After our refurbishment project, Desert Regional Medical Center benefited from:
- Upgraded air handling (AH) in operating rooms:
We changed the initial, degraded equipment and turned it into a final, restored system.
-
Lowered operational expenses:
The implementation of more efficient systems reduced the energy consumption, and it naturally led to lower operational expenses. -
More efficient air handling units (AHUs):
A performance-based improvement was visible after the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of AHUs.
As in the Desert Regional Hospital’s case, EcoGreenVision ensures to complete every project with minimal disruption to facility operations while maintaining code compliance and safety at every stage.
Results at a Glance
- saved $750,000 over 3 years
