About Huntington Memorial Hospital

Huntington Hospital is a 625-bed hospital in Pasadena, California. It’s a leading hospital recognized as the highest-ranked in the San Gabriel Valley. The hospital is committed to community well-being through high-quality healthcare delivered with kindness and dignity. It’s been an honor for EcoGreenVision to work with Huntington Memorial Hospital and help them fulfill their mission of building a safe and comfortable environment for patients.

The Challenge

Back in 2007, the hospital’s board of directors faced rising utility costs, aging equipment, and mounting compliance requirements. They needed a partner who could modernize facilities without disrupting 24/7 patient care.

EcoGreenVision’s Multi-Phase Solutions

Hebat Badiee has been the lead Design/Build director serving Huntington Memorial Hospital since 2007 and has provided multi-OSHPD and non-OSHPD projects valued over $15 million. A long-lasting project like this has so many chapters, obviously, but we can list the steps like this:

  • Replacing the centrifugal chiller (It’s the process of replacing outdated centrifugal chillers with high-efficiency models)
  • Refinishing air handling units
  • Replacing primary and secondary pumps, variable chilled water system, variable condenser water system
  • Implementing a new energy management system, new motors
  • Modifying patient rooms, induction units
  • Installing new lighting retrofit
  • Optimizing and controlling the chilled water system
  • Implementing new pressure-independent control valves

All these processes happened while maintaining 24/7 operations in the ORL, with no interruption to the hospital’s operations.

Results at a Glance

  • $2M annual savings on utilities
  • Over $15M in projects completed since 2007
  • $750,000 in rebates from Southern California Edison and state programs
  • 24/7 operations maintained with zero disruption

The multi-phase retrofits qualified the hospital for multiple utility rebates and state energy efficiency grants, further decreasing capital costs, saving nearly $2 million per year in utility bills. Beyond cost savings, there have been other benefits that are impossible to ignore: patient comfort, sustainability, and compliance with OSHPD/ASHRAE are a few to name. The most important one to note is patient comfort, since that is a hospital’s mission, and anything assisting a healthcare facility in accomplishing that is invaluable.
